Healthy Eating Habits

Developing healthy eating habits will be the best thing in the world you can do for yourself and your loved ones.  Being food smart isn't just about learning to calculate grams of fat or using a calorie counter.

Healthy eating is all about balanced and moderate eating, consisting of healthy meals at least three times per day.  You can eat more frequently with smaller meals and portions,.  Healthy eaters may eat many different types of foods, not limiting themselves to one specific food or nutritional concern.

Eating healthy requires quite a bit of leeway.  However, you should always fuel your body regularly with enough food to keep both your mind and body strong.  Healthy eating is a way of life, something that you do to enhance your body’s health.  If you've thought about making your life better, healthy eating is just the place to start.

Healthy Eating Weight Loss Tips

Healthy eating is a way of balancing the food you eat with activities that burn energy (calories) to keep your body in optimal health.  By enjoying healthy eating, you have energy all day, get the vitamins and minerals you need, stay strong for activities you enjoy and maintain a healthy weight.

Eat Often

Eating 3 meals with snacks in between is the ideal way to maintain your energy level and a healthy weight.  When you skip meals and get hungry, you're more likely to choose foods that don‘t fit your healthy eating profile.

If you are eating away from home take some good food with you or know where you can buy healthy food.

Healthy Food Preparation

Avoid deep frying.   Try baking, stir fry, grilling, microwaving and even boiling.  It helps to enhance flavors with herbs and spices.  Before you eat any type of meat, be sure to trim the fat and skin off of it.

When cooking your food, you should also limit solid fats such as butter, margarine, shortening, and lard.  They add flavor to your dishes but can also raise your cholesterol.

To help keep your saturated fat, trans fat, and sodium intake low, you can check the nutrition facts label.  This label is your friend and can be found on all processed food packages.  It will give you all the information you need about the food item.

Avoid Sugar and Salt

Drinks that contain sugar are a major source of empty energy.  The drinks contain a lot of calories that your body doesn’t need.  Most processed food products contain salt and sugar, eating several together you can accumulate more than you realize.

Healthy Food Choices

Eating healthy is something we all need to do, although it can be a difficult undertaking.  In order to eat healthy, you must first make the right food choices.

Vegetables - Vary the types of vegetables you eat but you should eat 3 cups of them each day.  Start eating more dark vegetables such as broccili and spinach.  Carrots and sweet potatoes are good as well.

Fruits - Fruits are very important.  You should try to eat 2 cups of them each day.  Focus on eating a variety, such as fresh, frozen, canned, or even dried fruit.  You can drink fruit juices as well, although you should use moderation when doing so.

Grains - You should consume 6 ounces of grains per day.  To do this, you can eat 3 ounces of whole grain cereals, breads, rice, crackers, or pasta.  You can get an ounce of grains in a single slice of bread, or 1 cup of cereal.

Meat and Beans - Eating 5 ounces of protein foods each day is the ideal goal and you should go lean with your protein.  When eating meat, always bake it, grill it, or broil it, as this will prevent grease from adding to the equation.  Vary your protein by eating more fish, peas, and nuts.  Eating beans and rice together also produces the protien your body requires.

Milk - Milk is calcium rich.

For adults 3 cups is ideal
For kids (2 - 8), 2 cups provides their calcium needs

When choosing milk products or yogurt, you should go for fat-free or low-fat.  Those of you who don't like milk or can't have it, should go for lactose free products or other sources of calcium such as fortified foods and beverages.

Healthy Eating Helps You Live Longer

By picking your foods wisely healthy eating becomes your lifestyle.  Exercise is the other side of your diet plan.  No matter what age you start, eating healthy will help you keep you remain active for years longer.
