Healthy eating and daily activity will eventually lead to weight loss.  But sometimes we want to lose weight fast.

An interesting study done in ‘99 has lead to a simple and fun method to help lose weight.  This little trick is based on the connection between your sense of taste and smell.  By inhaling certain fragrances at specific times you can inhibit your appetite and curb between-meal snacks.


Fat Loss Through Fragrance

The participants of the study would keep the specified scent handy to inhale a few minutes before meals and snacks or anytime hunger strikes.

For six months half of the over 3,000 weight loss subjects would breath these scents . . .

To help standardize the effect somewhat each participant was instructed to cover one nostril and sniff three times at the scent.  This was repeated with the other nostril.  Do this three time on each side for every ‘application’.

The other participants had a somewhat neutral detergent to smell at the indicated times.




Who could have predicted the outcome?

The participants with the fragrant inhalers reported a decrease in appetite and snacking throughout this double-blind study.

When the results were analyzed it showed that the group inhaling the fragrances lost 497% more weight.  On average, the subjects smelling the detergent ‘placebo’ lost less than 4 pounds while the members of the group with the fragrant food scents lost over 19 pounds.

Fragrant Diet Supplements

This little weight loss tip works because the sense of smell helps the brain to determine when the appetite has been satisfied.  Inhaling the fragrance of these three foods (peppermint, banana, green apple) tricks the body into feeling satisfied by fewer calories.

Smell Off the Body Fat

Essential oils are inexpensive and usually come in small bottles that are easily carried.  Use one scent for a month and then switch to the next.  This is important since it will be less effective if the scents are not rotated.
