Diet Food to Lower Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a major culprit that causes heart attacks, high blood cholesterol levels and weight problems.  This waxy substance is made in the body by your own liver and serves a number of vital functions.  It is essential to aid in building membranes, manufacture of bile, cell walls, nerve sheaths, and hormone production.

There are two types of cholesterol:

  1. Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) - the bad type of cholesterol, is known to clog the blood vessels, raising your blood pressure and increasing the risk of heart attack and heart disease.  A diet high in saturated fat is a major cause of raised LDL levels.
  2. High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) - the good type of cholesterol.  It helps clear LDL cholesterol out of the blood stream, reducing the risk of cardiovascular illness.  Research has shown that a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, along with average levels of omega-3 from fish oil, greatly helps raise HDL cholesterol levels.

Major contributors to high cholesterol levels;
  • Diet
  • Genetics
  • Lack of regular physical activity
  • Obesity
  • Unhealthy lifestyle (excessive drinking and smoking)
  • Hormones
Healthy Eating

The most important thing to know is which diet food will assist in lowering cholesterol levels.  Experts say that diet programs to lower cholesterol include good foods like;
  • Grains and whole grain products
  • Fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, sardines, trout and tuna)
  • Leafy vegetables
  • Nuts
  • 100% Fruit juice
When eating out, pick lean meat, oily fish, or skinless chicken.  Look for preparation techniques that don’t add fat to the dish;
  • broiled
  • baked
  • grilled
  • steamed
  • poached
Ask for lots of vegetable side dishes and fresh fruit for dessert.  Refrain from eating processed foods.

Use olive oil to replace all oils and fats (especially butter).

Use a lot of garlic in your diet food.  Garlic contains many beneficial substances, some that help lower cholesterol levels.

Drink lots of water to aid in the digestion process and balance the body to improve blood circulation.

Take in high quality daily vitamin supplements to improve blood circulation and lower your high cholesterol levels.

Aerobics and Cholesterol Levels

Exercise is fairly important in keeping LDL cholesterol at bay.  It strengthens the body, improves blood circulation and cardiovascular health in general.
